Editor's Note Fall 2025
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the inauguration of Dharma Drum Mountain’s main complex in Jinshan, Taiwan, founded by Master Sheng Yen. To commemorate this milestone, an anniversary ceremony was followed by a week-long pilgrimage that brought practitioners from around the world to Taiwan. Participants visited Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) monasteries across the island and experienced Master Sheng Yen’s vision and the spirit of DDM firsthand. Two articles in this issue offer reflections from that transformative journey, alongside an article that revisits Master Sheng Yen’s inaugural address delivered in 2005—a teaching that continues to guide Dharma Drum Mountain’s path today.
In his 2005 inaugural address, Dharma Drum Mountain Must Do What Is Truly Beneficial to the World, Master Sheng Yen emphasized that Dharma Drum Mountain exists not merely as a physical site, but to do what is truly beneficial and urgently needed by society and the world, grounded in the arising of great compassion. Two decades later, this guiding principle continues to resonate across generations and continents.
The articles that follow illuminate how this vision is encountered and embodied today. Iris Wang, in her account of the pilgrimage, traces a living continuity between the inauguration she witnessed in 2005 and the present moment. The personal sharing reports further reveal how encountering the Dharma in person—at the very places it has taken root—allows understanding to shift from concept to lived reality, leaving lasting impressions on the heart.
As we mark this milestone, may these three articles inspire you to reflect on how the Dharma continues to be carried forward through collective effort, and how compassion may arise in our own lives for the benefit of all beings.
